About

The Sea Cadet Corps is a national youth organisation for young people between the age of 10 and 18. It aims to help young people towards responsible adulthood by encouraging valuable personal attributes and high standards of conduct using a nautical theme based on the customs of the Royal Navy.

Each individual Sea Cadet Unit is an independent charity, which must be fully self-sufficient in terms of funding a wide range of activities both waterborne and shore based. Run by volunteers in their spare time, it can be a constant challenge to provide Unit HQ, minibus, boats and other essential equipment.

Southwark Sea Cadets contacted COBA Europe to ask if we would donate a quantity of COBAGRiP® GRP stair nosing for their HQ facility, a former Church Hall in South East London. We were pleased to oblige.

The Installation

The GRP stair treads were needed to enhance the underfoot safety of two sets of concrete stairs which join the two levels of the ‘stone frigate’ Unit headquarters. Installation was a straightforward task and carried out by the Sea Cadet volunteers. The edges of the concrete steps now have an abrasive grip surface to reduce the risk of slipping and being bright yellow, improve visibility of each step.

Lieutenant (SCC) David Bradbury RNR explains, “Under our affiliation to the Marine Society and Sea Cadets, we are required to adhere to all MOD (Navy) directives, including Health & Safety, and are inspected by MOD(N) annually. Installation of the COBAGRiP® stair nosing is supporting our compliance with Health & Safety requirements as dictated by MOD(N).”

About COBAGRiP® ‘Anti-Slip’ Stair Nosing

Stairs are notoriously hazardous when it comes to slips, trips and falls. Installation of COBAGRiP® stair nosing provides an effective precautionary solution to reduce such hazards. Manufactured from robust UV stabilised glass reinforced plastic (GRP), stair treads have a Silicon Carbide anti-slip gritted surface and are suitable for both internal and external applications. They are slip tested to R13 in accordance with BS 7976-2:2002 and help to provide safety underfoot in dry, wet, and icy conditions. A chamfered back edge provides additional safety and the stair nosing comes in bright yellow (meeting DDA visibility requirements). COBAGRiP® stair nosing is simple to install and maintain, and comes in 4 sizes in 1m, 1.5m, 2m and 3m widths. GRP stair treads and GRP sheets are also available from COBA Europe, forming part of the COBAGRiP® GRP safety flooring collection.

Southwark Sea Cadets Unit Management Team Chair, Mrs Sue Stevens commented, “Keeping the Unit HQ well maintained, secure, compliant with Health & Safety regulations, and neat and tidy is part of my role. I was delighted to receive the support of COBA Europe and very impressed with the quality of the GRP stair nosing which is perfect for our requirements.”
